Loadshedding: Backup power to keep your internet connected

You’re watching a new episode of The Crown on Netflix, devouring a bowl of spaghetti bolognese after a long day in meetings, when suddenly you’re plunged into darkness. South Africa’s energy crisis is a friend to no-one, and it looks like it’s here to stay.

Luckily Faircom has a growing number of sites that run on backup power during loadshedding. What does this mean? With a router and a UPS (uninterrupted power supply), the (dark) world is your oyster!

The following Faircape sites have backup power

  • Fisherman’s Village
  • Melrose Village
  • The Factory
  • Trinity Gardens
  • Leisure Bay
  • 23 Arthur’s Road
  • Camargue
  • Rochester Village
  • Cannon Gardens
  • Avondale
  • Fairdale
  • Cinnabar

Not on the list? Don’t worry – We’re always adding more buildings to the list.

What is a UPS?

A UPS, at its most basic, is a battery backup power system that supplies power long enough for equipment to properly shut down when utility power fails. It helps prevent loss of data and minimises the stress a hard shutdown causes on your electronic equipment.

Why do I need a UPS?

In case of a blackout, the UPS immediately switches over to battery power to provide a continuous power source for up to two hours. Battery life can vary by system and depends on how much power you use. The battery backup gives you time to power down sensitive equipment, servers, or even video game consoles without loss of data or progress.
