It’s Sunday afternoon. You feel like the protagonist in a Greek tragedy. Your household has just given a collective sigh. You just spilled your coffee. Your teenager is as mad as a dad in traffic. These are familiar words, but they still give you chills …
“The internet is down!”
Internet connection issues are a universal phenomenon, and the more technology advances, the more complicated they seem to get. We found a few answers to some of the “huh” worthy questions that everyone struggles with from time to time.
1. The connection speed is not the same throughout your home
The speed of your connection is linked to the distance between where you are using the wifi from and the wifi router. The further away you move from the wifi router, the weaker your signal will be. The easiest way to fix this is by moving your wifi router to a more central location in your home.
2. Only one of your devices is struggling to connect to the internet
You are trying to connect all of your devices to the internet and find that even though your tablet and computer have perfect connection, your mobile device is not connected at all.
Most of the time this is an issue that only lasts for a few moments, but if the problem continues you can try the old and trusted technique of turning your device’s connection off and back on. If the problem persists, you can try turning your wifi router off and on, or you can try to delete the network on your device and reconnect again.
3. Your connection speed drops at certain times during the day
There are certain times during the day that most people struggle with a poor connection. These times usually correlate to the times people are the most active on the internet. A lot of active users at the same time means there could be interference between networks and devices.
Another thing to remember is that there is a lot of underlying structure all across the city and even the ocean – sometimes maintenance is taking place, or it could just be that somewhere in this little ecosystem of connections, something went wrong.
4. Your wi-fi network disappeared
If you suddenly lose your wifi connection and can’t find it when you search for it again, it could be that either your wifi router decided to reset itself, other devices are interfering with the connection or that the driver needs an update.
To fix this problem, wait a few moments before you try to connect again and if you still can’t find the wifi network to connect, use an ethernet cable to connect your laptop to the router. You can also check if there is a new version of the firmware for your router and install it if there is.
5. You are connected to the network, but you cannot access the internet
If you are connected to the network on your device, but you cannot access the internet, you should try connecting different devices to establish whether the problem lies with your device or with the router.
If it’s the router that is the problem, put it off and on again. If it still doesn’t work, you should use the ethernet cable to connect your laptop to the router. If this solves the issue, then there is a problem with your router, but if the problem still exists then it means that the network is down and you’ll have to wait until it’s working again. Usually when this happens you will be notified by your internet service provider.
Of course it is safe to say that there are many more issues out there, each with their own little evil plan for world domination (just kidding). Your computer may have a virus, there may be unfamiliar devices connected to your wifi network, or … you forgot your password (it happens to the best of us).
Combating connection issues sometimes takes an army, or if you’re lucky, you can solve it quick sticks and be knighted a hero and friend to all in the realm.
Faircom Fibre will never harsh your mellow. We don’t cap or throttle you, and we’re quite determined when it comes to solving mysteries … especially if it’s the connection kind. We’re always just a phone call away.
